VITO helps companies make the transformation to a circular economy. Together with you, we search for production processes that don’t create waste, but do use alternative, recyclable raw materials. We work with you to devise more sustainable designs for your products and help give value to your waste streams. As a result, you need fewer new, valuable raw materials.

Water is also an important raw material. The quality of open water, rivers, estuaries and lakes are still often measured manually, and tests in laboratories use up valuable time. With satellite monitoring, data about the volumes and quality of water is sent directly to your computer. This is not just crucially important for governments, but also for companies, such as those in and around harbours.

FIRST CLEAN VISION SUMMIT MEETS ALL EXPECTATIONS

"The more we accelerate, scale up and stop unsustainable practices, the more room there will be to make the transition towards sustainability. Invest in sustainability, not in dead-end streets." Hans Bruyninckx, Director of the European Environment Agency, addressed the entrepreneurs at the Clean Vision Summit directly, and successfully so. VITO welcomed 450 participants and hosted 50 expert talks on sustainability topics.

"It's an illusion that we can continue the way we do," Bruyninckx began. He pointed out the complexity of the challenges Europe now faces. "Even if we implement all the measures announced, we will by no means able to achieve the ambitions set out in the Green Deal: a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. We need to step up a gear and further develop and implement as many innovative technologies as possible. But technology is not enough. We also need a change in attitude and behaviour.”

Hans Bruyninckx emphasised the economic aspects of the Green Deal. The European Green Deal represents an opportunity and it is up to the companies to seize it and act on it. Wim Michiels, CEO of Proviron, has already implemented this transition in his company. He spoke about it in front of a full auditorium.

This first Clean Vision Summit is an initiative of the Flemish research institute VITO. "If we want to speed up the transition towards sustainability we need to find ways to get in touch with the user", says Bruno Reyntjens, commercial director at VITO. "Sustainability is inseparably connected with the economy, with companies. That is why a dialogue with companies is so important.”

There was a great turn-out at the event. Participants were introduced to 22 innovations across 7 research areas. 12 VITO experts were challenged during a 15 minute scientific pitch. Visitors were able to get expert advice in the summit business café.

This first Summit was a great success. "I am very pleased," Bruno Reyntjens says. "We have achieved our first goal: setting up a direct line of communication with companies. The Summit has turned out a unique, professional and welcoming meeting place where research and business have found each other.”

Dirk Vangeneugden is project and business developer at VITO in the fields of sustainable materials and chemistry. He is strongly engaged in national and international R&D projects on chemical catalysis and sorption, lightweight composites and future generation batteries. Fields of expertise include 3D printing, surface engineering and coating as well as CO2 capture and conversion. He is inventor on over 15 patent applications and has great interest in management of intellectual property rights. He is actively involved in technology transfers to industry and supporting spin-off initiatives.

Jeroen Büscher

Jeroen Büscher is leading the VITO team working in the field of electrical storage. Together with that team Jeroen is focused on the development of technologies and services to make safer, more reliable and more performant batteries that support sustainable mobile and stationary applications. Since 2011, he has been coordinating and participating in several projects within Europe on electrical storage, e-mobility and smart grids. He is also representing VITO/EnergyVille in European collaboration efforts on battery development like the European Battery Alliance and the ETIP Batteries Europe.

Artificial intelligence driving accessible eye care

Eye diseases can go unnoticed for a long time, with permanent vision loss as a consequence. MONA is an artificial intelligence software under development at VITO, which can diagnose common eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma based on retinal photographs. The software can enable affordable and accessible eye screening service by identifying problems earlier and thus  strengthening preventative medical care. For MONA we are seeking entrepreneurs, partners and investors to validate clinically and market artificial intelligence based software for the early detection of eye diseases.

Patrick De Boever

Patrick De Boever works as project manager in the VITO unit Sustainable Health. He is responsible for the research team that uses data science and artificial intelligence for (bio)medical applications, especially in the field of ophthalmology.
He is also appointed as professor at Hasselt University. Patrick De Boever was granted the degree of bio-engineer at Ghent University and he obtained a PhD degree at that same university.

Patient-friendly Detection of Kidney Transplant Rejection

Monitoring kidney transplant rejection requires recurrent, painful and costly biopsies.  VITO discovered novel protein biomarkers of kidney rejection present in urine even before clinical signs of rejection occur.  The low-cost, urine-based diagnostic kits, developed in collaboration with industry partners, is expected to impact in functional transplant follow-up, patient survival and their quality of life. Come join our session for more details on this innovation and future collaboration opportunities.

Through its aromatic structure and functionalities, lignin exhibits a variety of properties by which it can serve as a renewable feedstock for the production of not only biofuels, but also materials and biobased aromatic specialty chemicals. Since the lack of reactivity is often a drawback in applying lignin as such, depolymerization of lignin is often used to create new reactive sites, hence resulting in a mixture of small molecules and oligomers. Diverse processes with varying process conditions have been developed, of which many have only been demonstrated at lab scale. The demonstration of available conversion technologies at relevant scale (TRL 5-6) is the next essential step.

VITO, VMH and Worley Belgium have joined forced in the ERDF LignoValue Pilot project to design and construct a continuous pilot plant for the depolymerization of lignin into innovative biobased aromatics in Flanders. The technology class selected is metal-catalyzed depolymerisation. The pilot facility, ready for start-up by end 2021, is designed at a targeted capacity of bioaromatics of 250 kg/day (10 kg/h).

Setting up this pilot line contributes to the ultimate goal: building and operating a demo plant in Flanders for the conversion of lignin/wood to biobased functionalized aromatics.

In this context in a joint collaboration, VITO and KU Leuven target the realization of a unique pilot infrastructure platform for innovative catalytic biorefinery of wood and lignin, and by extension any lignocellulosic material, into functional bio-based aromatics. The establishment of the pilot platform  contributes with necessary technological and economic proof-of-concept data to pave the way towards an industrial-scale catalytic biorefinery, transforming biomass into competitive chemicals and materials, resulting in a significant CO2 capture.

He has worked for Hydrochem as head of the environmental laboratory, then during 9 years at Ecowater Watrex as sales manager of the department industrial water treatment. He has joined VITO in 2005 and has since then worked as Business Development Manager in the VITO business unit 'Sustainable Chemistry'.

FlexThor - Say Goodbye to Solar Power Wastage

An unprecedented rise in solar installations has given rise to a new problem for prosumers in the last couple of years. Their PV installations fail to produce power on a number of sunny days. Consequently, 5 % - 10 % of their total solar generation is getting wasted every year as per recent studies done by NREL. This increases the payback period and degrades the panel lifespan. To solve this problem, VITO has developed a product FlexThor, which is a patented IoT based solution supported by powerful AI software suite that does smart energy management to prevent solar power wastage. It also provide a gateway to participate in frequency support and nano-grid operation. We are actively looking for investors, partners and stakeholders to roll-out our product FlexThor.

In 2018, Punch 2, the solar-powered car built by students from KU Leuven, sped across the finish line of the world’s most extreme solar-powered car race in first place. A competition that traverses the Atacama Desert and the Andean Mountains in Chile. The silent power behind the vehicle was the Battery and Ultracapacitor Management System. It monitors and secures all components in a battery, providing the exact battery capacity in real time. It’s not just for solar-powered vehicles. It has all sorts of applications for your company.
